There is a well-known dispute in the laws of Pesach (Orach Chaim 451:26) between the Shulchan Aruch and the Rema regarding glassware. The Shulchan Aruch rules that glass utensils require no special kashering, even if they were regularly used with chametz in a cooked dish. The Rema, however, is stringent, treating glass like earthenware, for which kashering is ineffective.
The Shulchan Aruch’s leniency is based on the understanding that glass does not absorb, being smooth and hard (Mishnah Berurah 451:116). The Rema argues that
since glass is created from earthly materials, it is like earthenware and never fully releases absorbed taste, even through kashering.
In situations where there are no other drinking or eating vessels, the Mishnah Berurah permits using glassware even for Ashkenazim, despite the Rema’s stringency, especially when properly rinsed or used in a manner that minimizes concern. This is especially relevant for short-term guests, for whom extensive kashering is impractical.
